From Garry’s mod to S&box
Yes, we (Pol, the one who writes these lines, Joris and Shoot) have a history before S&box. Since 2009 we have managed a french roleplay community on Garry’s Mod: garrycity.fr. Well not exactly since 2009… there have been breaks in the meantime.
Besides, this community is still on pause because we are currently working on S&box.
From now, our ambition is to offer a competitive game on S&box. A game that wants to be hilarious and addictive. To do this, we brought out of the box an old idea of our own: Monkey Fortress, a flag capture game with crazy monkeys.
We do not pretend to make a triple-A game such as a Counter Strike Global Offensive or a Valorant, but we rely on our creativity to offer entertaining, competitive, and replayable content.
Why S&box?
Unlike Garry’s Mod, S&box (or sandbox) gives much more freedom to creators;
First, let’s give a place to the Source 2 engine. No more use of old tools such as Crowbar, Milkshape 3D, or Hammer 1. Let’s place a bit for modernity! Hello .FBX/.DMX, thanks C# 10.
Moreover, S&box is much more oriented to the creation of games such as Roblox. I like to say that S&box is a competitor to Roblox. This orientation looks good: we love to create, we love the Source engine and we love the big Gaben, so the planets seem aligned.
But also, I think s&box is going to be a catalyst for creativity, bringing together a diverse and varied community. This can be a good entry point for making a name in video games.
Because yes, despite our seniority on Garry’s Mod, we are far from being video game developers. We have some knowledge but less than regular modelers and video game coders.
About us ?
As I said previously, we are 2,5 primates on that project. Me (Pol), I’m the code developer, Joris the asset developer, and Shoot will be the infrastructure manager.
Pol :
Normally I’m a full-stack developer, I previously code for a client with Spring Java Framework, Angular, Material… But all technology intrigues me: that’s why I’m touching other languages like LUA (for garry’s mod), C# (for s&box), PHP (for XenForo, WordPress), JS (for backend with NestJS). So maybe I’m a “Jack of all trades, master of none“: I will see the inconvenience in the future.
Joris :
Initially a metalworker, he gradually discovered himself in the world of asset creation: 3D models, textures, animation by different small projects on Unity, Unreal Engine, Garry’s Mod, and recently… S&box.
With huge baggage from the building industry, Joris started to work hard to pro-speedrun this new 3D world. He’s called: “le gazier”.
Shoot :
The servers maintainer. From the beginning, he brought up all needed to host services.
For this project, it’s gonna be all of the architecture of infrastructure. Like the game backend, the shop, and games servers. And make these things scalable.
And now ?
So, it’s with ambition that we are embarking on this new adventure. I imagine it will be rich in learning and I hope it will take us far!
